Why during the olympics were 3 minutes added to the end of the soccer match? The announcer said that an additional 3 minutes (for a total of 6) could have been arbitrarily added. No explanation was given.

  1. Depending on the game there is time lost, ex.. when a player fouls another player time goes by as they prepare for the foul kick. this and other things like going out of bounds and corner kicks, ect.. seconds go by and near the end of a soccer game the ref decides how much time was lost during the game and adds on with the usual 2,3,4 mins. It was not explained because alot of people who watch soccer know this. but anyway hope i helped.

  2. it is called stoppage time, it is extra time for time lost during the match

like if the ball gets kicked into the stands and it takes time to retreive it

or is someone is tackled and there is a loooooooooong protest

or is someone in injured, it takes time to examine him/her and to take him/her off of the field

  3. if time was lost during the game

then it has to be added

if not then maybe the score was tight and MAYBE something can be done with those extra minutes

  4. The referee is the official timekeeper for the match, and may make an allowance for time lost through substitutions, injured players requiring attention, or other stoppages. This added time is commonly referred to as stoppage time or injury time, and is at the sole discretion of the referee.  The signalled stoppage time may be further extended by the referee at any stage

  5. It's called stoppage time.  It's when you lose time from the 90 minute match from injuries, fouls etc...
