  3. The Earth is made of tectonic plates and these have joins where two plates meet. These are called fault lines. Japan is on a fault line. At fault lines, the two plates move because of convection currents in the crust of the Earth. Sometimes, one plate goes suddenly underneath another one and this causes movement of the plates and an earthquake.

    All places on fault lines (eg Japan, parts of America) often experience earthquakes.
