  1. In general, it's because most countries have laws which prohibit flags from being flown or displayed at night, unless the flag is illuminated or lit up. Otherwise, it is an old tradition in most countries. Hoisting in the morning is a sign of strength, and lowering is a sign of respect and dignity for the flag and for country it represents. In the US, the flag is ALWAYS raised quickly and lowered slowly. If a flag is going to be flown at half staff, then it is raised to the top of the pole, and then carefully lowered until it is in the halfway position. The same thing is true for a flag being flown at half MAST on a ship.  NO US flag is ever flown upside down, except in times of war or extreme national distress or emergency. One of the most heartbreaking memories I have of the 9/11 tragedy is the memory of the sight of our national flag in the upside down position. I hope I NEVER have to see such a sad sight again anywhere.

  2. actually, these customes are done to show the respect to our nation

  3. Flags symbolise power of the nation and its progress. so its hoisted in the mornin signifyin that the nation grows as the sun rises. and its lowered in the evenin b4 the sun sets. so that it doent signify that the power of the nation is weakenin. this is the reason behind the hoistin of flags.

  4. A nations colors were not to be flown at night.

In the USA only six places were allowed to have a flag flown at night.  Then the law was changed to allow places to fly in the dark hours if the colors were well lit.

For what it is worth, the hoisting is done rapidly.  The lowering is done quite slowly, and with dignity.

  6. Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,

What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,

Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,

In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:

'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion

A home and a country should leave us no more?

Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,

    Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation;

Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land

Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!

Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,

And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

    Verse 1 and 2.

  7. it's a tradition and the military dose it to.
