Time zones have nothing to do with it. A 10 hour flight will take 10 hours regardless of time zones.

The answer lies with the jet stream.

if you're traveling across the international date line, and east to west, you're gonna be a day earlier. and vice versa.

Because of wind patterns. Wind blows from west to easy, so when you are flying in that direction you are flying with the wind, but when you are flying from east to west, you are flying against the wind.

Because of the jet stream, which travels counter-clockwise (eastbound) around the earth. You can "surf" on it and it therefore takes less time. This does not apply between the tropic of cancer and the tropic of capricorn, though.
