Why gas (for cars) called gas when its really a liquid?

lol thanks for the oportunity. i used to believe it's because once the liquid fuel is burned, it becomes a gas :] lol but it's actually called gasoline, gas is just it's nickname :]

actually its called gasoline but gas for short
