  1. If one combines hydroponics (growing plants in water) with aquaculture (growing fish), then you have  aquaponics.  Aquaponics uses the water and wastes from the fish tank to supply the fertilizers, especially the  nitrogen, needed to grow the plants. An aquaponic system is a sustainable ecosystem, and if we harvest the fish or the plants for food it would be called sustainable agriculture. Saying something is sustainable means that it can survive on its own.  A sustainable ecosystem or sustainable agriculture is where plants and or animals are growth with recyclable resources so a lesser amount of inputs, such as fertilizers, are needed.   All we have to do is feed the fish and the fish and  plants survive very well together.  We do not have to spend money on fertilizers.

The growth of one species depends on the harvest of the other.

  2. It is very difficult to keep an aquatic environment perfectly balanced as to plants and animal life. We may wish to have a self regulating ecosystem, but it just does not happen.

When we have too much vegetation growing, it can start to die off, sink into the water and decompose. It really does not matter whether there are animals eating it. The decomposition will use up too much oxygen, killing off the animal life. We can avoid this if we harvest excess amounts of vegetation.

This is effectively the problem the oceans produce in large areas described as dead zones, miles wide with no living animal. We could also harvest that excess plant life from the oceans to both protect the  animal life and to use the plant life as fuel.
