Why has'nt the variable displacement,internal combustion,engine design made it into production?

Seems that the ERDA patent engine is right for these times.This engine upgraded to present tech will offer at least a 75% increase in fuel mileage over any common small displacement V-8,(5 liter) engine with that power still available. What gives?

  3. It has.

    Many modern V-8 engines shut off cylinders at highway speeds to save fuel. The technology has been around for a while. The first car I remember to have it were the Cadillac's of the early 1980s.
