Question:

Why has America abandoned Georgia?

Georgia is a staunch American ally, a future member of NATO and possibly the EU. It's territorial integrity is being disrespected by the russians and the best George Bush can do is to 'demand an immediate end to hostilities'. That's absurd! Is this how America treats its allies? If I was Israel, i would be very very worried, you can't count on America when you need them.

  1. There does seem some hope that the involvement of the USA and European Union in peace negotiations and the huge publicity this war is getting will persuade Putin not to invade Georgia. It does seem he may have been planning. Invading countries with tanks and air power is the way the Russians behave. It is not too many years since they did that in Hungary and then did it in Czechoslovakia and almost did the same in Poland, because the population of those countries wanted freedom from being ruled from Moscow. Then as now the USA and UK could not intervene on behalf of the Hungarians and Czechs because that could all too easily have started a world war between nuclear powers. But it seems that despite the collapse of communism throughout Eastern Europe the pulling down of the Berlin wall, and all the former satellite states like East Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Georgia etc.  having got free of being ruled by a tyrant from Moscow, the Russians still want to go on using their military might making mischief under Putin to rule those countries, just as they did when Stalin, Kruschev and all the other tyrants were in control in Moscow. And continue to put out lies and false propaganda to try to confuse the facts like they are now doing over South Ossetia, which is in fact part of Georgia and has always been part of Georgia, as it was even when Georgia was part of the Soviet Union ruled by Stalin (a Georgian) from Moscow.

  2. i'm sure they are providing logistics and satelite images.

  3. so now you think we should butt into another war.

  4. Why should America help this idiot, Saakashvilli, who raised a war a few hours after he promised to stop fire?

nini s, defending? Were they defending when they destoyed Tskhinvali? When Georgian tanks fired at houses of civilians? May be, you do not know that Russian bombers and tanks entered Ossetia after 13 (thirteen!) hours of war, after trying to use the last chance, the Security Council of United Nations?

  5. BS, I fully support nuclear war with Russia. In fact, Let's just blow up the entire planet!

    Who needs it!

  6. Actually, I live in Germany, and when I read the articles that the American media were feeding the Americans I had to laugh:) They seem to be portraying Russia as the 'Bad Guys". Silly, as they leave out the most important facts about why it all is actually going down. Try to get the facts about what's going down outside the US. I provided a link that tells all the facts, but I doubt you understand German. If you believe what the American government wants you to believe, then I feel sorry for you.

1.The Russians are trying to maintain peace between Georgia and South Ossetia.

2.Abkhazia was the country that initiated the air strikes.

3.Georgia militia is responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent South Ossetia civilians - mostly Russian.

  7. Georgia is not even close to joining NATO, because most NATO members are afraid of the incidents like the one happening know, and do not want to rush into war every time the Georgian president aggravates a conflict with its neighbors. However, I wouldn’t say that Georgia is abandoned. Don’t forget that the current government of that country exists only because of the Western support. In fact, it first came to power during a coup or a revolution that installed an American lawyer as a president (still in power) and a French ambassador as a foreign minister. Also, the Georgian troops that are attacking Ossetia have been equipped by NATO and underwent training by US marines as recently as a month ago.  Georgia was given everything it needed to protect itself and even to deliver a lightening strike against its Ossetian minority (which it blundered).

There may be reasons why US does not want to get directly involved in the hostilities or to overtly encourage the Georgian attack:

    1. A war with Russia is not an attractive option. There are still the nukes, you know. And our ground troops are still in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

    2. There is an issue of oil. The status quo in Georgia, with South Ossetia governing itself, lasted almost 20 years. Most of these years were peaceful and important infrastructure has been build to pump oil through Georgia. If the Georgian attack continues, it will take one Russian bomb raid to stop the pipeline.

    3. It is hard to maintain a straight face that Kosovo Albanians deserve their own state, while the minorities in Georgia could be attacked and killed. The numbers of Osetians killed in the Georgian raid are close to the casualties of Albanians in Kosovo, while the destruction of infrastructure (hospitals, drinking water, etc) is much graver. Since the alleged provocation, which was the Georgian excuse for the attack, was so minor in comparison with the total destruction of South Ossetia, NATO would have a hard time presenting Georgians as the good guys to the rest of the world. In all the likelihood, there will be a long media campaign to smear Russia before any pro-Georgian steps will be taken. In fact, the campaign has already started. For example, AP announced that “Russian troops raid Georgian town; scores dead,” without explaining that the raid was to drive out the invading Georgians from an Ossetian town and that the “scores dead” were the Ossetians killed by Georgian.
