Why has General Motors been so unsuccessful in the automotive industry? What can they do to improve sales?

  1. GM is either the 1st or 2nd largest automaker in the world.  Based on that I do not see why you say they are unsuccessful.

    True, their sales are down this year and their profits are way off, but they have the financial strength to survive.

    Like the entire auto industry they got nailed by the increase in oil prices which resulted in over $4.00 per gallon gasoline.  Because they were more heavily committed to large SUVs and pickup trucks than most in the industry they were hit harder than most.

    They are acting to improve sales, both short term and long term.  Their recent TV ads for example talk about how many different models they have that get over 30 MPG on the highway, they are working to get new more fuel efficient products out the door and they are working hard on vehicles powered by alternate energy (the forthcoming Chevy Volt for example).

    I think they are going to go through a very rought two or three years, but in the long run they will thrive.
