  1. Good!  I know that it had been stated on this site that 1 out of 100 babies born in Guatemala were placed for adoption out of the country.  I'm glad that it has finally been addressed!

  2. As stated, it is due to the Hague. Guatemala needs to become compliant in order for adoptions to begin again. There is some corruption everywhere...including the US. All the media publicity has been centered around a very small number of cases. The bad stories get much more attention the the thousands and thousands of legitimate stories with happy endings.

Don't be so quick to judge without truly knowing all the facts.

  3. CK is right, it has to do with the Hague.  All other issues (fraud, corrupt lawyers) are seperate and can be found all over including in the good ole US of A.

  4. The research I've done says it was because of a corrupt system brought on by demand from wealthy countries.  They actually have baby farms over there.  Women are actually getting paid around $2000 a pop to get pregnant and sell their babies to brokers.  Very scary stuff.

Here is a NY Times article on this very issue.

And there are many more where that came from.

  5. can you say "human trafficking"?  they got busted.

  6. They state it is because of irregularities and fraud.  Given that they started doing DNA testing of children applying for a Visa indicates that the child originally approved for adoption may not actually be the child that will be leaving the country.

My Aunt's friend has been affected by the halt.  Her parents are from Guatemala and she has adopted 2 children already.

  7. It has to do with the Hauge.  This is a newly enforced set of international adoption standards.  The U.S. is now Hague compliant and Guatemala is not.  Until they become Hague compliant adoptions can not be completed.  Check out http://travel.state.gov/family/adoption/...

  8. I thought that the US no longer allowed adoption from Guatemala because of issues with the adoptive services there.  Am I wrong?

  9. Child trafficking.

  10. Because Unisef paid the president of guatemal 6 million $$$ to shut it down. But this is their nice way of covering it up.
