Why has Michael Phelps gotten so much coverage?

If you had another athlete who was absolutely phenomenal in their sport (i.e. if Tyson g*y has a WHOLE lot better) would they receive as much coverage?

Because he is absolutely AMAZING, that's why! Obviously if someone were better than him, they'd be getting equal coverage. Kind of a silly question.

Well, he is a very good swimmer, and he's from America. I am a little sick of how much he's portrayed on the news.

Michael Phelps is making history and he deserves it! its not like hes going out there doing something that any normal person can do. I bet if you were an olympic swimmer you wouldnt get gold and set a world record for every swim.

I don't know but its really getting annoying, i probably know his life story by now. I mean obvioulsy he's an amazing swimmer but there are other amaizng athletes too. Im canadian but when i watch an american channel covering the olympics, he's all i see , and now he's ever slithering into the canadian channels and we don't want him !

I think he does but I can't blame everyone trying to cover him since he has the most gold medal in Olympic history. Olympics has hundreds of years of history.

Because Michael Phelps gets good ratings.  He's breaking World Records left and right.  Gold medals in every race.  Going for a long-held Olympic record... people want to hear about it.

It's what they do.  It happened with Mark Spits, Dan Jansen, Bruce Jenner, the list goes on.  They pick one talented athlete and go with it.  I don't mind, Phelps is an unbelievable swimmer.

I think there are too many swimming events- there are countless great athletes at the games but they just don't get the same opportunities to win medals that he has. It's unlikely that the greatest Olympian would come from any sport outwith swimming.
