  1. Its because that China always claims that Taiwan is a part of China, thus the name as China only allows them to appear on sports as a separate team under the name Chinese Taipei as Taipei is the capital city and Chinese means own by China. I think the China has cracked down on Yahoo ! on the issue or may have some fuss on it. Yahoo! have to do something in order to survive to have its Olympic page. Or else, it may be sued by China and unwanted situation may happen. I guess its a win-win situation for both side about the change.

  2. Taiwan has not and does not change the title to Chinese Taipei.  The title "Chinese Taipei" is an agreement between IOC, China and Taiwan that allows Taiwan to participarte in olympics. But before the opening of Beijing Olympics, China tried to change Chinese Taipei to China Taipei - a political move trying to render Taiwan a part of China.  That is why Taiwan protested and asked for using Chinese Taipei according to the IOCagreement.

  3. Taipei is the capital of Taiwan.

Accordiing to Taiwanese, Taiwan is an independent country, despite they use R.O.C.(Republic of China) at the end of their address.

In the view of Mainland China, though, Taiwan is NOT an independent country, but a province instead.

The reason is that Hong Kong is now also referred to as Chinese Hong Kong because its territory now officially belongs to Mainland China.

  4. I noticed that too. But they have always used Chinese Taipei for a long time. And you may also have noticed too that they didn't use the Taiwan flag.

    Here's the reason:

China claims that it 'owns' Taiwan. While Taiwan claims that it's an independent country(and so does the majority of the countries in the world). If China said Taiwan instead of Chinese Taipei, that would've meant that China reconizes Taiwan as an independent country. And if other olympic hosting countries said Taiwan instead of chinese Taipei, that would've meant that they reconize Taiwan as independ. It might spark a big debate between those two countries, even war.

But I mean, politics is complicated. As long as Taiwan is participating in the Olympics, I'm happy with that.

  5. Taiwan is not "Chinese Taipei" any more than Canada is "American Ottawa".  "Chinese Taipei"  What a dumb name--and shame on the international community that goes along with it!

  6. I don't know why sorry, but yeah i noticed that too.

I don't know what China is up to

technically, isn't Taiwan independent and have NO connections

    to China at all?

I saw it in the Opening Ceremony was was really confused

  7. They call it that to appease China, who are hosting the Olympics.  Taiwan considers itself independent, which it is.  China however considers it to be part of its rightful empire.  The Chinese government kick up a stink any time the name Taiwan is mentioned, as they believe that is an insult to their sovereignity.  The Taiwanese Olympic team have agreed to compete under the name Chinese Taipei so as to be able to attend.  Otherwise there would have been a furore, China probably wouldn't have allowed them to compete and it could have escalated.  Things have been very tense between the two countries.

  8. Technically it never did, and most Taiwanese people would be insulted by you saying that, me being part Taiwanese am a little insulted. But in the Olympics, China protests that Taiwan is part of China, and since the Olympics is supposed to be good and stuff, the Olympic committee gave in and Taiwan has to march under Chinese Taipei, and isn't allowed to carry the Taiwanese flag. Now about 60 years ago, China did rule Taiwan, but after World War Two, Taiwan gained it's independence. China still claims Taiwan is part of China even though it's not. Chinese Hong Kong does exist, China does still own Hong Kong, but not Taiwan. Taipei is the capital of the country Taiwan, so China claims that the country itself does not exist, so they use Taipei like the capital of a province. Some counties still don't consider Taiwan a country, but still acknowledge the fact that Taiwan is not part of China. The USA is one of these countries, instead of having an Embassy as they do in countries, they have a Taiwanese Consulate, which is basically the same thing but only for places the US does not consider a country. But Taiwan is NOT a part of China, but China simply protests that it is.

  9. They havent changed it. They are just using Chinese Taipei to participate in the olympics (probably a result of negotiation between everybody....)

  10. Taiwan is still Taiwan (or Republic of Chine) - but has to use the Chinese Taipei name to be able to participate in international events. The PEOPLES Republic of China would object.

  11. http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing...

    It still shows Taiwan

Jerry Yang is Yahoo's Founder - A Taiwanese -Dont think he will allow that change on Regular servers -Could be on the PRC servers only.
