  1. The main reason was the boycott of the Soviet Union and the eastern bloc countries.

They boycotted the L.A. games, in response to the United States boycotting the 1980 Moscow games.

  2. Steroids?  Cheating?  Bribing the judges?  Underaged gymnasts?

    Fake figures?

  3. Host countries tend to do much better than their average performance. If you look at how well Greece and Spain did at their home Olympics in comparison to an away Olympics, you will see definite improvement.

It would be difficult to compare Greece's results this year compared to the last Olympics due to 16 of their athletes being disqualified this year for use of performance enhancing drugs.

Home field advantage coupled with The Soviet boycott was the best explanation.

Despite all of the sour grapes conjecture towards the United States team, most of the drug disqualified athletes this year are from the European continent, with most disqualifications occurring just prior to the games.

  4. The USSR led a boycott in the United States Olympic games in LA in 1984 because the "capitalist" countries boycotted in 1980.

  5. Definitely because of the boycott by the USSR and its allies. The Soviet Union was always a strong country, so when they were gone they left a lot of medals open for Americans.
