I have an hd player and I just got it. Now I see on the news that Blue Ray has won. Why? And how is this going to affect the HD dvd owners?

  1. I can answer the second part of your question.

You're screwed. You won't agree at first. You'll hang on to your equipment in denial, searching desperaterly the bargain bins for any HD-DVD's. Finally, when all you can find left are dozens of copies of "The Bridge to Taribithia" in HD-DVD, you'll give in and buy a Blu-Ray.

The reason I surmise Blu-Ray won is better advertising, all the stores always had one set-up, the price dropped considerably, and the fact the PS3 comes with it built in.

  2. BD was always considered a technologically better format, but more expensive. Toshiba tried to compete in price, but even at bargain prices, due to the PS3 sales and more support from movie studios, looks like BD may be the winner in CE sales. However, Toshiba, with the help of Microsoft, may still win in the PC world - although HP and Dell sell already drives that support both formats (both HD DVD and BD).

Even though the HD format has been out for a while, people still buy SD DVD players. You are affected as much as the rest of us; you can't play BD discs.  I am sure there will still be SD DVD releases for quite some time, but most of the new HD releases will probably be in BD.
