Why has my cot mattress gone yellow?

When I changed the sheets in my baby's cot I noticed the edges of the mattress have turned bright yellow. Does anybody know why this is and is it dangerous? My son is not actually sleeping in it at the moment as he does not sleep well in his own room, so has a travel cot in our room. The cot is pine and has not been painted, but could there be something in the wood that has made it change colour? I'm slightly concerned to try to get him sleeping back in it now I've noticed.

Is it plastic covered? Plastic is very suceptible to discolouring....but take it back! The shop have to give you your money back!

uh oh!!!! seriously though..... it could be bleach factor.....  to much bleach..... over time whites become yellow, and colors become dull!
