Question:

Why has my laptop broken?

My laptop has broken. When it comes on, the screen is black and tells me to choose an option to get it on: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Commands, Previous Successful Startup and Start Windows Normally. I have tried every option and it will not start at all. And to top it off, all my coursework is on there - and its back to school next week. Any advice?

  2. Yes. Always back up important work before you finish using pc. OK when your laptop starts look at the screen and look for a message that will get you into the bios like press C TRL/Delete/CTRL ALT ect: when you get into bios look for a sentence that say reset to optional settings or fail safe configuration. Also when you start pc go to Previous Successful Startup and Start Windows and leave it for a while to see if it starts up.

    Goodluck.

  3. WHERE IN THE WORLD? PC WORLD =]

  4. Take it to PC World for repair and retreival of your files. It's probably the hard drive shot. Of course if you had backed up your work to a stand alone hard drive you wouldn't be quite so worried. Buy one!

  5. Hi Jamie

Sounds as if you may have lost some windows setup files. I suggest you do a Repair Install you will need your recovery disk or Windows installation disk This is for Windows XP and will format your hard drive and will reload  Windows setup leaving all your files/data intact if this does not fix the problem no harm will be done. Will take about 2hours depending on the speed of your computer.

    Follow these instructions.

1.Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2.When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft

Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

    3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press  R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press  R".

    4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

    5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.  Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

    6. Reapply updates or service packs applied since initial Windows Xp installation. Please note that a Repair Install using an Original pre service pack 1 or 2 XP CD used as the install media will remove SP1/SP2 respectively and service packs plus updates issued after the service packs will need to be reapplied.

If you have Vista try this site.

    Good Luck

  6.    You have a corruption of the operating system. One of the files needed for start up has been damaged possibly by a program or windows update thats been recently installed.

You didn't say what make the laptop is but, if it came with a restore cd, you will need to use that. If there's an option for it, then you could try running a windows repair/ non-destructive recovery(this depends on the recovery media for your particular machine). However, before doing this, I'd advise, as others have before me, getting any files you need recovered and backed up (at a computer shop if you have no other way of doing it).

Although it may be a none destructive recovery that you run, I've seen people use files many times in the past.

The main thing to remember from this for the future is, ALWAYS back up any important files/documents on a regular basis as you can never be sure what may happen in the future.

        Hope that helps.

  7. Take your laptop to a computer repair shop and see if they can remove your hard drive and install it in a different laptop or computer and download any irreplacable files from it such as pictures, non-backed up documents etc. on to a CD or DVD disk or flash drive.  Then, put that data into a different computer at home or use the flash drive with the computer lab at school until they can figure out what is wrong with the laptop.  The problem could be caused by a number of things and it could take a few days for them to figure it out.  Since your computer will not start in any of the modes listed, it is difficult to troubleshoot on your own at home.  One thing you could try is to try removing the battery and plugging in the laptop to a wall outlet.  Sometimes, the battery fails and that will prevent the computer from starting.  If that is all it is, get a replacement battery.

  8. DO NOT GO TO PC WORLD

THEY WILL OVER CHARGE YOU AND WONT FIX IT.

    :)

You'll have to either use the recovery console or use the boot disk your computer came with.

But I can't stress enough how much you shouldn't go to PC World

  9. you may be able to do a recovery

    start>

    programs>

    accessories>

    system tools>
