Question:

Why has rugby not caught on in America?

Really. Its so much more fun, interesting and exciting, to watch or play. All we have here is football, yippee. Why is it that most Americans just don't seem to "get" rugby?

The thing that gets me the most is all the guys going on and on about how "tough" football is. Please. You wear pads. You stop play when someone drops the ball, and go pick a new play. Fat guys can play football. This should tell you something. Rugby is something like the third most popular sport in the WORLD, yet America remains almost untouched. Why do we prefer our wimpy, knock-off version of rugby to the real thing?

Help me out here. My next mystery is "why are women rugby players automatically presumed to be g*y?" but one at a time. Please help me.

  1. Same reasons why Gridiron will never take of in Australia, with all the pads its considered 'g*y', whereas in the US its the other way around!

We do play American Football in Australia, on a small scale, I played for a Club in Sydney, but we only ever managed a hundred people at the ground, not 50,000 like the Rugby crowds!

To see American Football in Australia see www.wspirates.com home site for the West Sydney Pirates American Football Club! Pirates, Pirates forever!

  2. world sports don't catch on in america. american sports don't catch on in the rest of the world.

because they aren't brought up with it.

  3. It's a bit like here in NZ...we don't really get into gridiron...I like the look of it but I really haven't clicked with the rules...I suppose it's what you grow up with....its the same in many countries...if rugby was introduced in Brazil...soccer would still be the main sport...

  4. We already have football so it is harder to switch to Rugby I assume.

  5. Soccer marmies would never permit their kids to play rugby cos they might get hurt, Think if america were allowed to play in the six nations it would take off there in a couple of years. But thats not going to happen.

  6. Probably why Gridiron hasn't hit it here.  Although there is an asscociation here, its not as big yet.

  7. Because americans are stupid. I am from canada where we are blessed by being able to play both rugby and american football. Dont knock football. Even though they do have pads they get hit harder (Rugby is still tougher) and it allows me to hit something during the fall. Dont worry though, just like how lacrosse has caught on in the states, rugby will start to pick up as well. I know that some of the northern midwest states has started to pick up on rugby.
