  1. As previously mentioned, Australia IS probably the best sporting country in the world when you consider the population of the country at about 21 million people.  The only global sport I can think of now that we are doing poorly at is soccer and as soon more money goes into it and more public interest...will we be winning world cups too.  But that will take a few decades for that to happen...but it WILL happen.

  2. What are you exactly on about?  Are you suggesting Australia is not competitive or are you suggesting behaviour is an issue or are you just an idiot?

  3. OK, we are world champs in cricket, just beat the WC holders in Rugby, won the WC in R.League numerous times, had world champs in squash many times, won Wimbledon on numerous ocassions, golf champs, & won the Americas Cup, & many other sports, & just now won a good swag of medals in the Olympics, not bad considering our population compared to the top runners. Just what part of that embarrasses you? With all your whinging, it is easy to see you have English rellies. I suggest if our sporting climate doesn't live up to your standards, you should get on the next plane out to Blighty!

Edit: BTW, apologies to my Pom friends here for saying that, but this guy is unreal!

  4. Australia are actually one of the great sporting nations! At the last Olympics in 04, Australia where the only country who appeared in the top 10 in total medal count, and in the top ten of most medals won per million people. Not too shoddy, eh? Certainly better than darling old England. ( Or Great Britain, whatever.)

  5. Bingalee left out a few, how about the Melbourne Cup which is contested by horses from all over the globe each year,The Socceroos, several motor cycle world champions, several Formula 1 champions, champion racing greyhounds such as my avatar picture, and I could go on. But what it all boils down to, is you couldn't handle the Poms winning more medals then us in the Olympics. I guess you live by the old saying,'if you can't beat them, join them.

  6. i think matey means recently, and i tend to agree with him......the olympics were a washout for us.......and you can't judge it on populations.....Cricky,if there are 60 million poms and 20 million of us,does that mean we should get a 3-0 head start at soccer??

it's a known fact that the poms tend to focus more on education and use sport as entertainment, where as we've been the opposite for yrs,

our recent dip in form only means that the nation is getting smarter,so it's not all bad news

  7. LOL Binga don't worry, us Brits love a good ole whinge and you were just kindly providing us with some ammo :)

  8. Compare this

UK population: 61 million and 2008 olympic medals 47

AUS population: 23 million and 2008 olympic medals 46

and what do you make of it
