Why has the doctor given me PENICILLIN for Glandular Fever when i have found out Penicillin will do nothing for it?

Glandular Fever is a VIRAL infection and penicillin is used only for killing off BACTERIAL infections...

is it maybe to kill off some of the bacteria in my throat and to keep the fever down?

i am a little confused :S

  1. I have Glandular fever and was misdiagnosed with Tonsillitis until i had to go to hospital. They gave me Penicillin as well and i had to take it incase of any "underlying bacterial infections"

but when you start taking a coarse of penicillin you cant stop because you may become immune to it which is a TERREBLE thing. So just keep taking them and get plenty of reast :)

  2. Heya,

To me penicillin for glandular fever, sounds like the doctor was wrong, because as you said it is only supposed to be used for a bacterial infection when glandular fever is viral. What i would do if i was you is go back and get a second opinion of a different doctor ive got a feeling the doctor has got this wrong if he hasnt got it wrong then he must think there is something bacterial to treat. My advice go and get a different and second opinion of a different doctor. In order to put your mind at rest.

Penicillin will keep your fever down.

    Hope i helped
