Question:

Why has the names of most of the IPL squads been associated with royalty, and imperial authority?

Just consider the name of the following IPL teams.

Punjab King's XI

Rajasthan Royals

Kolkata Knight Riders

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Chennai Super Kings.

Isn't it strange that the names of 5 out of 8 teams has been associated with kingship and royal power, inspite of the fact that India is the world's largest democracy? What can be the real reason behind choosing such names? Only Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, and Deccan Chargers haven't associated themselves with imperial authority. Please think about this a bit seriously and express your views.

Thanks for answering.

  1. I don't think so.It is  a royal respect to kingship.I don't think that's strange.really good.They r just saying they r kings.

  2. Because while millions of poor Indians are going hungry due to high food prices, the players are being paid millions of dollars to play a dozen games in 44 days, doing little more than whacking 30 or so balls as hard as they can, or bowling 2, 3 or 4 overs a game for a maximum of around 50 overs in an entire tournament. The money is coming from sponsors and rich owners, eager to cash in on the sport's popularity with the burgeoning middle class, the novaeu rich.

This blatant capitalism is akin to imperialism, royal disdain and disregard for the have nots, while the rich investors become richer on the back of the tournament's success, thus widening the rich-poor divide with complete apathy to the predicament of the masses.

This is why they christened themselves "Kings", "Super Kings", "Royals" and "Knights" in the same way as the kings and nobles of old feudal systems who summarily ignored their subjects while increasing their own treasures/fortunes and power.

  3. Some members at http://www.forum.sportsatisfaction.com suggested :

"it's an Indian thing, Indians have a lot of pride in themselves and their culture." captainofkings

"i dont understand this obsession with royalty. it seems theyre all just trying to outdo each other." deejay

"Why are so many teams being so unorginal, surely there must be more to India than Kings and royalty! " The Indian

I think everyone will have to call the teams by their City names, it's too confusing otherwise " Aussiegoesbolly

  4. Pure lack of imagination. Is another reason why I like KKR and DD

Also even tho' some people do not like the name Mumbai Indians, it is rooted in the Common Man.

Only word 'Indians' is inappropriate with foreign players. Must be political too.

Another reason maybe, the 'hangover' from the Raj days. Many some cannot shake off the Royalty.

  5. Lack of originality.

    Names sound impressive.

Squad owners think they are handling Royalty.

These maybe some of the reasons. But something tells me it is the first one.

  6. what u say is partly correct but thee names have their own beauty and there is nothin wrong in it as they sound good and lend a strong feeling to the team.

  7. slavish mentality.pseudo superiority.

  8. They feel by selecting good players they can now float on the clouds. But u don't know what's going to happen.

The Daredevils are strong enough to bring them down to the land.

  9. I think that cricket is now became a business .......

  10. i think they have been associated with kingship and royal power because the IPL is like a battle field where these teams have to survive..........its like the survival of the fittest and the best..........

also in the advertisements they use the hindi words like "Karmayuddha" , and "Mahasangram" which suggest that the IPL is like a battle field for the teams.........

and only the kings and royals fight wars.............

i think that in case of Delhi Daredeils, the word "Daredevils"  suggests  their daring nature.........

in Deccan Chargers , the word "Chargers" suggests their confident nature, and their readiness to win the battle..........

so names of most of the IPL teams are associated with kingship and royalty

  11. that's  just  for  fun

Royal challenger is a brand owned by  Vijay Mallya, also

Karnataka has it's old palaces still as a tourist attraction.

Rajasthan  still  has it's  palaces and a royal family, that's why

Punjab  was a land of kings according to  Preity Zinta

Chennai and Kolkata  teams have named that way just like that.

Knight riders has not much to do with royalty, the concept of

Knights was never there in India.

    I  think  Delhi daredevils,Deccan chargers,Mumbai Indians

and kolkata Knight riders are forward thinking names.
