Why has the united states withheld payments to the united nations?

All members of the United Nations are required to pay dues under the UN Charter. In the case of the USA, it appears that much of the opposition to paying UN dues is not derived from an intrinsic resistance to the UN but rather from reservations about UN performance.

Note:

A majority favors the US paying its UN dues in full, including its UN peacekeeping dues, rising to three in four when given information about spending on the UN and UN peacekeeping relative to other foreign policy budget items. Political candidates who favor paying UN dues are viewed more favorably than those who do not.

The US, in UN estimates owes more than US $1 billion in arrears in payments to the world body.

Because the United Nations has made attempts to limit our sovereignty, and dictate policy to us.  Why would we condone that with payments?

We did provide the land, the building for the United Nations, and the security.  Why should we foot the rest of the bill, too?

The US wants the UN to reform its assessment of how much we contribute to the UN.  Currently we pay for 22% of the UN budget (the only other country whose contribution is even close is Japan @ 19%; the UK's contribution is around 6%).

Which is more that any other country in the world.  The UN likes to point out that our debt to them is nearly equal to that of every other nation in the UN.  h**l, then even keep a chart on the UN website that points this out.

However, we're the host to the UN, take care of security for every nation's ambassador that is a member, and our citizens fork over our hard earned cash so that foreign diplomats can come here and reap the benefits of our society.

I'm sorry, but I think the UN and the rest of the world are a bunch of whiney, namby pamby crybabies.

let's see- the un is in the US, the diplomats have immunity where crime is concerned, new york bends over backwards to accommodate the diplomats and we should pay dues? ha. the un is a corrupt bunch of leeches

1) Our assessment is WAY more than it should be.

2) The UN is corrupt. Much of the money winds up in individuals pockets.

Because the UN is super corrupt and has never done it's job.

The primary goal of the UN is to make World Peace and over the Last 60 years it hasn't done squat. The Oil for Food Program is a wreck, and do some research on their anti-terrorism actions. Not even half of the nations in the UN say terrorism is bad! Plus they spend like $2 a year on counter terrorism.
