Why has there never been a hurricane Gary?

Gary is a very common name.

  1. It maybe discrimination.  Do you think they will ever name a storm Richard, Samuel, Theodore, Ulysses, Victor or Walter?

Yes, it is a common name.  For whatever reason, the predetermined list of tropical cyclone names has not, and does not currently include Gary, as other "G" names have been agreed upon by the World Meteorological Organization, which compiles the lists.  You can see the latest tropical cyclone names here: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml

    I see that there is a "Garry" on the standby list for tropical cyclones in the Fiji region.  Perhaps if one of the "G" storms becomes strong enough to have it's name retired, Gary might replace it.
