Question:

Why hasn't my doctor checked my cervix?

I'm 39 weeks, due on Sunday, yet my OB hasn't checked my cervix to let me know whether I am softened or dilated at all. Should I be concerned? I'm not sure what I could do about this. When I mentioned it to her she said "Oh, we'll check next week." I'm due next week, so this wasn't at all comforting.

Also, I would appreciate it if you could take a look at my other question. It has to do with my nerves prior to labor and I'm interested in hearing about other mothers labor and delivery stories. I appreciate any tips/ advice. Thank you in advance.

  1. There really is no reason to. It doesnt matter how dilated  you are, some women get stuck at 2 or 3 cent. for weeks! I went from being a fingertip and kind of soft to full on labor in a day and a half. Also there are lots of risks for infection at this point. I would really limit it anyways.

  2. Check your cervix for what??? Even during labor checking the cervix has very little relevance to the outcome of the labor. There is no need to "check" the cervix for anything. Im sure it's still there. The cervix has it's own way of telling you that it is preparing for labor...increased cervical mucus, bloody show as it actually dilates, and when you are fully dilated and effaced, your body starts telling you to push. I hope that women can start listening to the wisdom and intellect of their bodies to navigate them through this labor and birth thing...its not rocket science and you don't need a doctor to tell you anything about your cervix.

  3. At my OB, you have to ask them to check. Last pregnancy, I told my doc I had been feeling random contractions and they asked if I wanted to be checked and I was 2 cm. dilated. So, yeah, you have to mention it or flat out ask.
