Question:

Why hasn't my kitten pooped?

She is 6 months old and was spayed on Monday (the 18th). She fasted from 8 PM on Sunday until Tuesday morning at about 7 a.m. and she ate regular meals (canned morning & night, dry food grazing throughout the day) on both Tuesday and Wednesday. She has peed several times but still no poops! We had to change her litter to the Yesterdays News (she usually uses Fresh Step) per the vet (so that the litter doesn't get in her incision).

Should I be concerned?

She is also still on meds (Metacam Oral suspension) through tomorrow (once a day).

I'm concerned that she might be constipated, or that she doesn't like the litter. Either way, her belly has GOT to be full and I'm worried about her incision/stitches.

Please help! Should I call the vet? (I told them yesterday that she hadn't pooped and they didn't seem concern b/c of the fasting.)

  1. I would be watchful but not worried at this point. She was fasting and I think that was a very long time for her to fast. She is eating and peeing fine. So give it a little tincture of time. If she is still not pooping by Friday then add a little drop or two of Cooking oil to her food.  This usually will "oil the way" a little bit.

  2. She'll be ok. You're doing all the right things. When she needs to p**p, she will. Try having a baby by caesarean section and being unable to p**p for 4 days after the birth: it's agony! But I survived. Your kitten will, too. Good luck!

  3. I'd ring the vet and let them know she still hasn't gone.

Monitor her habits in the litter box, make sure she isn't going in there and straining to p**p and isn't producing anything.

Cats are finicky creatures, and sometimes they will refuse new litter. My Mom's cat didn't pee or p**p for 4 days because they had changed the litter. I went out and bought her regular litter at once, and she peed and pooped right away. Maybe try taking out the yesterdays news and putting in shredded news paper?

But if she is eating and drinking and acting normally and doesn't seem to be in pain .. she may be just fine. I wouldn't worry unless she is acting sluggish or painful.

Keep an eye on her and let the vet know and see what they have to say.

And congrats on having your kitty spayed! That alone shows you are a loving and caring owner!

    Best of luck!
