Why hasnt there been any hurricanes or tropical storms this season?

Not that I want there to be but we keep hearing about how the drastic the global warming effects will be. Do you think they might be wrong about global warming? It might not be actually happening. Why would the slightest increase in the Earth's average temperature be considered global warming?

  1. The Atlantic basin hurricane season won't be here for months. It will officially start on June 1 and will run through November 30.

  2. There is no average temperature.... or climate....

The reason that there aren't any more hurricanes and tropical storms is because of the rapid decline in temperatures worldwide.

  3. It is strange isn't it? That the cries of stronger hurricanes have become silent. It is likely because warmer temperatures probably won't lead to stronger hurricanes, and that the number of hurricanes has actually decreased since 1950, when we were in a noticeable cooling trend. Why, you may ask? Well here are a few refereed studies to explain why:

Free, M., Bister, M. and Emanuel, K. 2004. Potential intensity of tropical cyclones: Comparison of results from radiosonde and reanalysis data. Journal of Climate 17: 1722-1727.

    -Better instruments means better observations.

-Less contrast between poles and equator=equals less violent and frequent storms.

    -Wind shear actually decreases

  4. That is strange that we haven't even had a single tropical depression since Hurricane Katrina, but none the less, the earth is actually cooling. and this cooling is making the atlantic basin inhospitable to hurricane formation.

on another note, earth heats and cools in cycles. that has been evident for billions of years.

I think right now, the earth is just trying to make up her mind what to do.

  5. You can't predict good or bad hurricane seasons on a year to year basis.  You can predict that over the next 10 to 20 years there will be more or less hurricanes or that they will be on average be of a higher class.  Which means if you predict for 20 years you must wait 20 years to know, if you predict for 50 years you must wait 50 years to know if your prediction is true.  Just because you may have 2 or 3 years of greater storms means nothing.

  6. Because "this season" hasn't started yet.  The season generally starts when the ocean water starts warming around June.

The "drastic" effects of global warming are long-term concerns.  Climate scientists are looking down the road 20, 50, or 100 years when they see the serious and clearly noticeable effects.  The concern is that you can't simply turn off a heater once it gets too warm.  Once the CO2 is in the atmosphere, it will remain there for a century of more continually increasing the heat of the planet.

While 1 or 2 C may not seem like a lot of global warming, you need to realize that the difference between our current average global temperature and the last ice age's average global temperature is only about 5 C.  So a few degrees can make a lot of difference in our planets climate.
