I need help on my government school assignment ill really appreciated if someone helps me.

1) Why have First Amendment rights been viewed as essential to the functioning of a free society?

2) In what ways have these rights been of particular importance to women and minorities?

3) Although First Amendments rights are considered essential in a constitutional democracy, it is sometimes argued that these rights must be limited. Under what circumstances, if any, do you think limitations are justified? Explain your answer.

    just to tease you, I am currently reading the reports by James Madison on the Constitutional Debates in 1787, and so far, it seems like there was a clear consensus that a democracy is not what they sought to create, but rather a representative republic.
