I work out on a regular basis -about 3 times a week but and I usually like to run on the treadmill but lately I've been forced to use the elliptical because when I get on the treadmill within ten minutes my legs hurt from shin splintz. What is causing this? How can I get rid of them? Thanks

  1. walk on your heels. and stretch them a lot. u might want to ice them, though i don't know if that would help much.

  2. The trick is to walk on your heels as much as you can whenever your not running. It helps a lot, trust me! Also, if it gets really bad, try taking it slower when running.

  3. do toe raises, the really work.  they are just the opposite of standing on your tiptoes.  bob up and down on your heels, just lifting your toes a few inches off the ground.  do several sets of 25 or 30.  these worked well for me :)

  4. all righty. here's the  trick (: you can do several things to help your shins feel better.

    1. like the others said. do toe raises. you can do this sitting down at school, work, while eating, etc.  keep your heel on the ground and lift your toes up & down maybe 50-75 times

    2. again, do what i call "duck walks". on your free time, put your heel on the ground again, and walk (semi-normally) with your toes up.  go around 20 feet, and walk back the same way

    3. to RELIEVE your shins, i advise you to use heat lotions ( ie bengay or icy hot ) put it on your shins (inside or outside shin splints) then using your thumbs, press hard UP your shins, then put your thumb on the bottom agiin and press UP your shins. NEVER press down, it's not good for you =/

    4. ICE ICE ICE! i recommend you taking an "ice bath" and not just put a baggie of ice on your shins. to take an "ice bath" get a trash can or a bucket full of ice and water and just put your legs in it, ( you can just put up to your knees) for 15-20 minutes, never over 20 minutes, it's very bad for you.

P.S. don't worry. the elliptical should help you keep in shape (: (not excellent, but decent shape)  i did the ellipitcal too, & it sure made my butt and quads hurt X)
