Why have I lost the sound from my built in speakers after using earphones?

I wanted to listen to something on my laptop last week without disturbing anyone so decided to plug in my earphones from my iPod. Everything was ok until the next day when I turned on my laptop and couldn't get any sound from my built in speakers. I tried plugging in the earphones again and the sound works perfectly with them plugged in, but when I unplug them all I have is silence. I have checked all my settings and everything seems to be fine. Obviously it is not practical to use earphones all the time and I would like to know how to get sound from my speakers again, can anyone help?

  1. It sounds as if your laptop is thinking that the earphones are still plugged in. This has been happening a lot recently with people and laptops and the usual outcome is needing to take the laptop to the shop to get the port repaired. You could try putting the earphones back and twisting them slightly and gently, then removing them to see if it makes any difference. If not, I'm afraid you will have to go to a computer shop and have them take a look at it.

  2. There's a small plate in the jack and it's springy, so when you put the earphone in you break the contact to the speaker and when you take it out it's supposed to spring back and make contact. Try the following:

GENTLY insert the jack plug and twist.Gently pull it out again. If this doesn't work after three goes, I'm afraid your jack is broken.

  3. new jack my pal.... tht's wot u need open ur cpu, n unplug the jack cable from motherboard.. if it brings the sound back into ur speakers.. the change the jack... else GOD help us all

  4. Maybe there's something wrong with the headphone jack, maybe it thinks the headphones are always in.. ofcourse they'd work if this was the case but speakers are always muted..
