  1. No, that is not the reason.  If they did not censor it, China would boot them out altogether.

  2. to appease the controlling nature of the chinese govt

what's worse is i fear they're trying to do it here

  3. They do not enjoy the same freedoms in the US as we do.  They do not have freedom of press or speech like we do.  Therefore the government tries to control the information that they can receive.

  4. There have been many "questionable" things going on between American based search engines and communist regimes...I don't have the source...but I know there was a case where Google was actually supplying information about Chinese dissident Internet search histories.  They may have been responsible for imprisonments or worse....

  5. i think because china's commie

haven't you seen the chinese google joke with spongebob? let me find it for you

  6. b/c children skip school to go to internet cafes and view watever

  7. Because the government is still a bunch of commies.

  8. google and yahoo have not set up censored sites but the Chinese government has they do not want any one within their borders to learn about things like democracy.

  9. China is so populated that if they had full access it would jam the networks.

  10. really???

  11. Anthony, Let me make a couple points here.

First, I am an American living in China. I have first hand experience of the censorship by the Chinese over internet sites. Examples include Wikipedia, most blog sites, some entertainment sites, and to my dismay, recently Yahoo groups. I use groups to stay in touch with my family state side and to post my (non chinese threatening) poetry. Now, as of four days ago, I have lost these sites to the great internet wall. I have a yahoo tech working on the matter but I have low expectations.

Next point is why does Yahoo allow this. Yahoo did not go into business to fight the freedom of the internet fight or to fight censorship, they went into business to provide a service, to maybe revolutionalize the web and they way we use it, and yes, to make a buck. When the Chinese told them they had two choices, stay out of the chinese market all together or be allowed in with certain rules and limits. It isnt Yahoo imposing the censorship, its the Big Red Brother. Yahoo, by going in on a limited basis gives people like me the chance to communicate with the outside world through email and they let me stay in touch with news and other services. I respect Yahoo and understand why they had to bow to the communists requirements. and yes, its about money.

Next point is Tibet. I know the commies are crushing the Buddhist religion here. Its no secret the reds fear religion and will move heaven and earth to suppress it. This is bad, its wrong cubed. Religions are a basic human right. BUT, when religions get political, they must pay the price. You should know that Tibet under the Dali Lama suffered horrid poverty, warlords ran rampant, and the Buddhist leaders were able to do little about it. The Dali Lamas always had close ties with the Chinese governments, with the dynastic leaders. When the dynasties fell, so did the close ties. Being political goes both ways. The Buddhist should not have politised thier religion. And one last point, other than the buddhists, most Tibetans live better lives under commie rule.

I am not supporting the Chinese government nor am I anti-buddhist (quite to the contrary). I am a realist who intends to fight his own battles against censorship on the internet.

By the way, thanks for your questions, hopefull more people will become aware of the mounting censorship of the internet. Not just in China either. Note Googles adherance to the US military complaint regarding images on the new google world site. One last point, censorship should not be a governemental gig, it should be an individual/parental gig. each computer set up to allow or disallow what ever as set by the computer owner. This would drive away negative sites through attrition. think about it.

  12. Because when it comes between doing what is right and making more money. Making more money always wins.
