My tomatoes are planted in a rectangle flower pot and they started out blooming now there are about three small to medium size tomatoes on the vine, but for some reason they have completely stopped growing (still green). On one vine I see this black stuff that looks like tar and I also saw a caterpillar on it. What can I do to start them back growing really big and well?

  1. What area of the country do you live in  (zone)?  Is it wet or has it been hot.  High temps will effectively shut down the plants from producing as fruit won't set when temps are consistently above 95 degrees.

  2. Well, they have stopped growing because they have contracted a decease, which is called "Septoria leaf spot"This decease sets in after the fruits have set, and is enhanced if the weather is wet and or humid. You may have bought the plants with the infection. There is nothing you can do now, because this will simple degenerate. When you see fit remove the plants, and disinfect the ground, do some field work on the types of plants which are resistant to decease next time before you buy.

  3. It sounds like they have been over watered-thus the black stuff.I doubt they will come back,as it is getting a bit late in the season.Let them dry out a bit and see if that helps.
