  1. To protect crops, ranchland, parks, military sites, and many other areas. Cities and towns are not the only things that protection from flooding. There are lots of private and public reasons for dikes.

    Also, flooding could poison drinking water for nearby towns


  2. There are many things to protect.  Crops is an excellent example.
