Question:

Why have so many people started making illegal turns from the second lane?

I've been noticing this more and more lately. So many people don't bother getting over into the right hand lane or the left hand lane before they make their turn.

What is going on here? Are people just lazy, uneducated, or is there something else going on here?

  1. Generally I think your suggestions of being lazy and uneducated or stupid pretty much fits the problem. Like lately to get on the freeway instead of going and turning around on the bridge to get on the freeway in the other direction people will just turn onto the freeway on ramp in front of traffic even though there's a sign saying no turns I'd like to know whats up with that.  I guess everyone will find out when that persons coming driving following the rules hits that idiot for making an illegal turn.  Its happening way to much and I agree with you more cops need to be on patrol and ticket for wreckless driving or being a dummy.  Good luck

  2. They are probably distracted by one or more of too many new gadgets available to them to remember to drive properly.

Cell-phones, GPS devices, iPods, you name it, more and more people seem to be using it/them while driving these days. Add to that the fact that some are (as you said)  lazy, uneducated, and complacent.

  3. Having had it done to me, repeatedly, at the same intersection, where I was in the left lane and had the option of going straight or turning, my guesses are going to be (A; impatience. (B: incompetence. And (C: distraction.

The ease of getting and keeping a license and insurance has lead to a number of drivers that feel they're too good to read the signs.  That was evidenced today on a personal level with another driver on a one way street, with whom I nearly had a head on collision when I came around a blind curve. According to him, after he got out of the Lexus to tell me precisely how he felt about punk kids like me in their 4x4's, he'd lived there for longer than I'd been alive and it was his right to choose how he got home and I didn't have any say in the matter beyond the signs indicating well before, and frequently, along the road that indicated that I had been going in the right direction.

Let's call that one a victory of youth and skill over old age and treachery.

Simply incompetent drivers abound. When it comes to variable turning lanes, which can change from hour to hour depending on traffic, they don't pay any attention and assume that what was a fair turn in the morning commute to work will be a fair turn on the way home. I used to needle a coworker about the fact that he never looked out the windows when he drove. (Same guy I had to go pull out of his yard after he got stuck in the wake of record spring rains.)

And when you figure the number of people that are paying more attention to their cell phones, speaking GPS systems that tell them to turn now, the proliferation of in-dash displays that can be used to play DVD's, it often seems like every driver in the US has ADHD at times.  "Oooh, wait, I've gotta turn here, where's the pause button? Oh, that's some punk kid in Dad's car, he's not gonna hit me. What's that dear? You're breaking up. What sign you little @sshole?"

Simply put, it's become so easy to be an absolute tool in traffic that the police simply can't enforce the laws in place to prevent bad behavior, driver inattention or often even obscene disregard for safety.

Drive defensively is about the best suggestion I have up my sleeve. Not to say I don't violate the law occasionally, but I typically try to make sure that it isn't going to be hazardous to other motorists if I do.

Getting chased to work by a guy pissed off for just such a left turn that he made, when I used my truck to keep him from forcing me into oncoming traffic at the light ended when I called work on the way and had six big guys waiting for us to arrive. It also made me keenly aware of how idiotic more and more people are when they get in their cars.

They used to refer to the kids of the '80's as the "Me Generation." Given the attrocities carried out in traffic these days, by people of all ages, I'd like to see that comment retracted.

I'm not going to bother with sources.

I've had people ***** at me for owning a 4x4, the aforementioned chase, and due to growing road rage, I keep the tank above a half and know where I can use the Jeep's capability to get away from someone that wants to turn my failure to let them do whatever the h**l they want into a fight.

    Drive Friendly.

  4. Because theres too much traffic for the one lane and traffic flows like water, it goes wherever it can.

  5. Like my dad always told me ..

    Rule # 1 : People are stupid !!

  6. Get used to it, That's the way they drive in Mexico.
