  1. Well it basically had a PS2 inside.

It Had extra Chips that made it 99% Backwards Compatibility with the PS2(The 20GB had it too).

But that made it cost more then they were selling it for,

    So they were losing money.

So the 80GB came, but it was cheeper, because it only had emulation(80% of PS2 games). But the same problem happened.

So Now Sony Discontinued All ps3s(20,40,60, and 80)

    To make a new 80GB,

    And a 160gb.

They both wont have any PS2 Backwards Compatibility.

    The

    20GB/60GB Was

released in North America on November 17, 2006

Does the model Number really matter?

People usally just say 60gb, 40gb ect.

  2. currently right now there will only be a 80gb and 160 gb the old 80gb with backward capability was discotinued to make one with no backwards capability

    so the

    20

    40

    60

    80 are all dead

    to make a new

    80 and 160 gb ps3

80gb will be 400 bucks and the 160 will be 500 bucks in november

  3. They were discontinued because YOU didn't go out and buy one in 2006 or the first half of 2007, when they really needed them to sell.

They lost so much money just on selling them for $600 it was ridiculous. Ending up with overstock sitting in stores not selling made things even worse. Sony killed the model before it was even 1 year old.

The 60gb ntsc was phased out at the end of 2007, ditto the 60gb PAL.

I went out and bought a 60gb ps3 in April 2007. But that wasn't quite enough. There were too many people saying, "no, I'll wait for a price drop." And sure, the price did drop, except it took the quality right along with it.

First launched in US and Japan was November 2007, that's the good model, the NTSC. I don't feel like looking at the model number, if you're looking for one it will be called a "60gb NTSC ps3."
