  1. In a word: "spam".

    (Well, that and "because they can".)

    Recent estimates put the burden of spam at more than 90% of all e-mail traffic.  In order to handle all that spam, all the big ISPs (and even the little ones) have had to increase their bandwidth, which costs them more, which gets passed along to the consumer -- in this case, you.


  2. Very few people subscribe to dial-up anymore. So it's more expensive to maintain.

  3. they are slowly trying to tell everyone that its easier and cheaper to move to DSL.

    At $15.95/month for dial-up it is going to be better to pay a few bucks more and move to DSL or another competing low-cost broadband alternative.

  4. It's called inflation. Obviously, you haven't shopped for food or gasoline lately.

    Everything is going up.
