Why have there been changes to speed limits in Britain over the last 100 years?

I agree with Robert.  Technological advances have allowed us to travel at faster speeds.  In addition, population growth limits speeds in some areas, but with the advent of the interstate system, it has allowed for better movement of people & goods.

As cars become more technologically advanced, they are able to travel at higher speeds in a safer matter. Advancements of parts and other features such as design and testing have pushed the overall safety of cars over the last 100 years.
