Why have tv shows in 1080i, why not 720p?

Question

1080i is ok but when theres some movement or anything the freaking picture messes up a little bit due to it being INTERLACED.. i know they show sports games in 720p so why not everything in 720p, whats the upside of 1080i over 720p?

720p requires more data and more bandwidth than 1080i

In 1080i you only send 540 lines per field

In 720p you send 720

In 1080p you send 1080p
