Assuming that by "we" you mean America, it's because we have become complacent, lazy, and ignorant of our rights. We are told what to like and how to think by corporate entities who stand to make a profit from us. So we are force fed garbage in the form of tainted journalism and live daily in an atmosphere of shallow consumerism. What's worse is we don't even know that it's happening. The average American also knows very little about history, therefore can have no meaningful appreciation nor understanding of those who fought for freedom and equal opportunity. Good question, I think its because we are all to bloody comfortable, rocking the boat may lose us our shopping rights, the "celebrity" media also has a part to play, nobody is interested in politics any more, all they want to do is buy c**p and watch big brother, so we meekly let these douchebags in power make millions, while we all stare dumbly at the telly,  or flick through endless pages of mind numbing celeb rubbish, I'm sorry to say this but I think the youth of today are as dumb as a box of rocks, wheres the political debate, wheres the student demonstrations, all too busy taking useless degrees in "media studies" and getting drunk, it ticks me off I can tell you.

and if you want to know what I am doing about it, I am a Union rep for the CWU, and fight and argue for peoples rights the whole time, let me tell you its getting harder and harder to get anyone to stand up for themselves these days.
