  1. My question, is the water level going down? They are fast and the visit to the feeder is so short that you may be missing them.

I have humming birds in my yard all day, my husband never sees them so he insist that we don't have any.

If you put up a feeder and the birds are in the area they will find it. If you have flowers in your yard it will increase the chance of getting them. They prefer trumpet type flowers and they are attracted to red. The cardinal flower is the perfect flower for humming birds.

In most cases some people don't get a chance to see humming birds in their yard till the end of summer or early fall after the blooms start to fall off the flowers.

If you can clean and change the water once a week. They don't need the food coloring. I mix one part sugar four parts water and let it boil a couple of minutes. let cool and put in feeder, any leftovers you can store in the refrigerator

    Good luck.

  2. Why? Hard to say. Maybe by the time they noticed it, it smelled funny. Maybe they feel vulnerable in the spot you put it.  Maybe the mix wasn't strong enugh.

If it has been out there a month change the food.

The first time ,mix the mix a little stronger than the recommended 4:1 and use red color.

Put it in an easy to spot covered pace where they won't fear predators AND near a natural food source at first.

Gradually move it where you want it.

    They'll come.
