The answer is simple... the NHLPA will rule before the end of August on whether to open the CBA... The NHL took away the agreement that allows bonuses for Veterans over 35 to push the cap up to but not over 5% the Cap this year by or allowing those bonuses to count against the cap either next year or 2009-10! They did this as a deterrent to keep the NHLPA from opening the CBA. When the NHLPA announces that they wont open the CBA the NHL COULD reinstall the *buffer* of allowing bonuses to exceed the cap max. So what this boils down to is this... if those guys were to take what the teams offer them right now, they probably would not receive any performance bonuses this year. If they wait until the NHLPA rules and the NHL reinstates "the buffer" that allows for the bonuses to exceed the Cap by 5% they all could stand to make significantly more money!
