Question:

Why/how are some DVD's so expensive?

I'm looking to grow my DVD collection, particularly with some of my favorite television shows. Often I find them used from rental stores, etc. at very reasonable prices. Some, though, I can never find except for ridiculously high prices. The worst seems to be Star Trek. Even used, seasons of The Next Generation run for $40; or $50+ new. The whole collection, even though it's only seven seasons is prohibitively expensive at nearly $400. How are these prices set in the market, and whose shenanigans do I have to call to get them down to reasonable prices? Is it just demand? Who's willing to pay that much for a couple of discs?

  1. I think its probably a marketing thing. The companies probably want as much profit from it as possible. I know Star Trek is actually nuts with the price. Although it's gone down in price. Last year Voyager was like $126.99 which was nuts, Enterprise was like the same prices. At least now Voyager is between $62.99-$79.99. I think the newer the show the more expensive it is. I know for the Simpsons DVDs the first season I bought it was like $19.99 and season 10 is like $49.99 or higher. I only buy the Simpsons around $39.99 or less. Star Trek TNG I've seen for $69.99 new, which is insane considering the fact that it's 14 years old (since it ended).

  2. Everything is WAY expensive, especially DVD's.

However, I just saw Star Trek Next Generation, (And Stargate SG-1), at Sam's Club for thirty dollars (star trek), and twenty for Stargate.

  3. i guess its just the economy everythings price is getting higher sadly
