  1. the orbital are alwayz oriented in a way such that d angle betwenn them is d max. to reduce repulsion...

so...in sp3 hybrid, d ideal angle is 109.5 and results in a pyramidal tetrahedral.....got it?

  2. Because sp3 hybrid orbitals were DEFINED as lying along the central axes within a tetrahedron.  Valence bond theory and hybrid orbitals were invented in order to explain the molecular geometry of molecules, and the explanation works very nicely.

The predictions based on valence bond theory and hybrid orbitals are very accurate, most of the time.  It is a very powerful way of predicting the molecular geometry of molecules because it was developed for that very purpose.

Some students are sometimes confused, and say that methane is tetrahedral BECAUSE of sp3 hybridization.  That's not true.  Methane is tetrahedral because that arrangement of atoms has the lowest energy.  We should say that methane has sp3 hybrid orbitals because it is tetrahedral.
