  1. Because all of those areas were once part of Mexico until America expanded  west and we took it from them in war.  Those names had already been given to them by the Spanish Padres.  The USA originated from Anglo origins, but it is far from an Anglo Country.

  2. California, Arizona, New Mexico and other states belonged to Mexico.  Mexico's Santa Ana (I forget what he was though) sold it to the United States and is known as the Gadsen Purchase.  In California, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara (I'm not sure about that one though) were the cities were the Catholic missionaries set-up missions.    Just as some places in the South (Lousiana) have French names (The Lousiana Purchase).  You see, half of this country was invaded, and the other half was bought.

  3. Sounds like you really know nothing about the USA. Maybe you need to study other cultures and broaden your knowledge.

  4. We're a country of immigrants.  All states and territories were named by people who lived in them at the time.

  5. The USA is Anglo country because the culture is Anglo (language, legal system, and other aspects from English origin). The country in itself is the result of the mix of cultures, and you can see that in the name of cities and towns through out the USA. Cities established by Spanish were named after Spanish names, so did the British and Dutch.

  6. It's not. It is a multicultural society.

  7. Yeah, like Connecticut, Massachusetts, Kentucky and Tennessee are all good Anglo names?  Just what map of England have you been studying?

  8. Because America is a "melting pot" if you will of many different cultural influences. In the west, the long time occupation by spanish speaking peoples have influenced the cities to have spanish names.

  9. Review your U.S. history!

  10. Because the part of the USA those places are in were once part of the Empire of Spain, and later Mexico. The USA won them in the Mexican War. (1840's). FYI, San Diego is named for its mission started by Fr. Junipero Serra. Los Angeles is named for Pueblo de Los Angeles, on Oliverra Street (still there, downtown L.A.) where 12 families settled and built a church. In California, the "Anglo" names of cities and towns are far fewer than the Spanish ones.

  11. Because those areas were under the Spaniards and Mexicans control before they started to be part of the USA, the same is with Texas, Florida and New Mexico.

  12. What about Houston, New York, Boston, Detroit, Richmond, Alexandria, Arlington.

  13. USA is not an anglo country!

    USA is a Hispanic country!

well.... geographically, is half and half.

Somos un pais con dos idiomas mayoritarios: Ingles y Español,

dos secciones linguisticas como en yahoo respuestas y yahoo answers.

  14. Actually, USA is not an Anglo country. People are mixed !!!

  15. Because the United States as we know it now purchased or conquered areas that were originally conquered and given their modern names by Spain.

  16. USA is a melting pot of cultures
