I can't understand why they build so many weak homes all over the US ,and then they wait for tornadoes and hurricanes to destroy them to build them again.Does it have to do with insurance industry??They are making big money!!!!But we're los human lives ,losing billions of dollars in material.I can't believe they can't build a home secured agaisnt all of these disasters!

  1. those are the old houses they haven't known about it only when tornadoes and hurricanes hits.

  2. Its all about the budget. People don't understand that their homes could be in serious danger just because they want 'to save a couple hundred dollars'

  3. I think a lot of retired people, like in Florida, don't have a lot of money and use their savings to live in less expensive housing, like mobile homes, and of course, mobile homes in a coastal place like Florida is just a disaster waiting to happen. Florida has warm weather to help people who are old with arthritis, but the weather just sweeps across the state from the Atlantic into the Gulf of Mexico like a hot knife through butter.

  4. Think of it this way: if your house was falling down around you, which would you rather have: bits of wood or chunks of concrete falling on your head?

(This argument works much better in California (earthquakes) than Florida (hurricanes) but the principle is the same.)

I spose its a little like crumple zones in an engine bay: it is designed to collapse in the intrest of safety.

Also, isnt it easier to rebuild a wooden structure than a concrete one?

I wouldnt know, im not a constructor :)

  5. Sorry to have to break it to you, but no matter how well you build a house, a hit by a tornado or hurricane will simply wipe it off the face of the Earth. When a tornado hit our city 20 years ago, it went through an industrial area and picked up storage tanks that were over 50 metres high and about 200 metres wide, throwing them about half a kilometre away in a crumpled mess. Buildings made from concrete and steel were simply leveled.

  6. they are the old houses .
