Why in Aussie Rules do the goal umpires signal........?

........a behind when the ball hits the goal post?

They also signal out of bounds when it hits the behind post. This is the only sport I know, in the world, that has such a silly rule.

They don't do it in the rugby codes; soccer; basketball; hockey; lacross; polo; hockey etc.....

  1. The early guys who compiled the rules were illiterate & couldn't cheat from other code's rule books. So they made up their own. That's what really happened.

  4. I hear tell a Collingwood official helped draw up the rules in the early days.

    As per norm, he was not very smart & he came up with this silly rule.

    That's what I read somewhere. I can't vouch 100% that it is true.
