Why in beach volleyball do they always bump the second hit instead of setting it?

  1. Usually because of the sweat and sand that is collected on the volleyball.  Both can cause the ball to be too slippery when using only your fingers to set.


  2. The above answers are correct.  Wind, rain and sweat make the use of hands risky.  

    Plus, the use of the hands are called much more tightly by the referees than indoors.  A guideline used is the spin on the ball.  If the ball spins more than 1 complete rotation, it is a double hit.  

  3. It depends on how the ball is coming to them. If the ball is coming low, they need to bump it, if it is coming higher, they should set it.

    It also depends if it could be raining, and the ball could be slippery, or sometimes the ball collects sweat which also makes it slippery.

  4. because its outside and very humid and hot and the ball is usually wet and etc. that they have less of a chance to make a mistake bumping it rather than volleying it (setting it)  

  5. because there's more room for error when you set the ball.
