Why in compatibility, the Venus sign is compared to the Mars sign?

What's the point of this? Shouldn't Venus be compared to Venus, and what else should you look at in synastry?

Venus in a man's chart shows how he relates to females. Mars in a woman's chart shows how she relates to men. This is a tremendous over-simplification, but it does help to answer your question. Personally I only use synastry charts to confirm what I already learned from the two natal charts considered separately.
