  1. ye an u ever notice sometimes they have to have one black or one asian friend with the white star of the show. an asian kid nvr stars....so weird

  2. White is just more common and white sells. ( Not saying black dosen't. ) But that's just how it is. Hopefully it will change. Usually the black person plays the minor role or something. Never really the main role.

  3. Almost every time someone made a cartoon with a black character( even if the animator or story writer was black) Naacp or rev sharpton or Jessie Jackson would try to sue over it. You can check some of these banned cartoons by the way( some really are horrible :/):

  4. Because most cartons are based on white characters .

  5. probably because most of the people making the comics are white so they can 'relate'!   and when they actualy do its usually a bad guy, or some thing like that.

  6. Hummmm that is an interesting question I dont know why people of color are not represented in these medias.

  7. you know that has never caught my attention. ummm your right, well at least green lantern in the Justice League is black and pretty cool.

but a part from that i've never really realized it.

  8. White is a more common skin color. They're not trying to be offensive

  9. Well some would say its a white mans' world. And i would agree when it comes to some things. Even though it's not a nice thing to admit.

  10. Years ago there were lots of comics and cartoons of black people but they are nowadays considered offensive and racist.

The cartoons then were stereotypical images of black people which exagerated their features and were seen as figures of fun rather than fun figures !

Nowadays, it depends on the market, comic books in Japan feature both Japanese and European characters, in India last year Marvel released a comic of an Indian Spiderman who wore the same mask as the original Spiderman but also a dhoti and carried a stick.

Perhaps comic books and cartoons in Africa have pictures of black people, i don't think it applies to the Caribbean as 1. most comic books are imported from the U.S. and 2. the racial hang up and stigma as black people or dark skinned black people don't appear on TV too much, most of the people on Caribbean TV are either from the white or East Indian communities or are Mulattos or other mixed raced people.

As the U.S. and Europe dominate world culture and philosophy we are more or less living in their world no matter where we live, people in any part of the world wear western clothing, listen to western music, east western junk food and drink western sodas so it is much the same in the comic book world, it is a western idea and fosters western idealogy which may conflict with the customs and teachings held in other parts of the world for centuries.

So in this regard, comic book characters and cartoon characters will almost exclusively be white as they are geared towards the Euro-centric cultures of the world - Europe, the Americas and Australasia.

I am surprised though that ethnic communities haven't been more represented in this media as immigrant populations are commonplace in most of Europe and in the U.S./Canada etc. and they have been well represented on TV.

In Britain there is at least one black or Asian character in every TV show and in nearly every TV advertisement despite only making up less than 10% of the total population.

In TV land there are also more equal opportunities for people from an ethnic background LOL as most of the Police chiefs are black whilst in real life there aren't any in such an high office and many other actors appear in top civil service or professional roles on screen which is in complete contrast to the chances of working in such roles in real life.

Although reality doesn't mirror the TV portrayal at least ethnic groups are represented on TV, they also commonly appear in magazines and newspapers so it is possible than in Britain at least there are black and Asian comic and cartoon characters.

It has been years since i read a comic book but i don't remember any ethnic characters in the British comic books but they may be in there nowadays.

Going back to TV, the Simpsons is quite multicultural with characters like Carl, Apu and the Mexican Bee man so there is some ethnic diversity on TV at least in the U.S.and didn't there used to be a cartoon character voiced by Bill Cosby called "Fat Albert" ?

Perhaps it isn't too unlikely that ethnic characters will appear in comic books and cartoons in the near future ?!

    Regards

    Jon
