  1. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that in smaller societies, like some hunter/gatherer groups, where everyone shares and shares alike, thanking someone for something is rude.  If I remember correctly, the idea is that, by thanking them, you're implying that you're surprised that they helped you out.  In a small group that survives only because its members pool resources, it's insulting that someone might think you wouldn't.

  2. Do some research on reciprocity. It should explain the answer to your question. Giving you an answer is of no use, because every society have their rules when it comes to reciprocity.

I think in this case it would have to do with the 'thank you' being interpreted as the gift or favour being returned immediately to the person that gave you the gift/ favour. There should be a(n) (extended) period between the 'giving to' and  'receiving' from that individual. Try getting your hands on 'The Gift' by Marcel Mauss. A number of other anthropologist have discussed reciprocity, try reading their work.

  3. Many societies consider a slight bow, preferable to words, being a more appropriate expression of gratitude...

  4. Depends on how u say it i guess.

  5. because you seem selfish

  6. what societies are those?

  7. No way, you've gotta be jivin' me on this one.

One thing I get sick of if when those clerks in stores and fast food resturrants always says say thank you, have a nice day. That I get sick of, but not a simple thank you.

I don't where you heard those 2 words being impolite, but you must be seriously mistaken.
