I went to register my daughter to a School District in NY, and in one of the secretary's top drawers there was a picture posted with the legend: Why in the h**l do I have to press "1" for English?

Is not this sign kind of racist or discriminative?

  1. Why SHOULD we have to PRESS ONE FOR ENGLISH? This America...SPEAK ENGLISH....or provide other numbers for the hundreds of other languages/dialects!  I went in to Lowe's one day and there were signs in English and Spanish (only). Being the smart butt I am, I walked up to the customer service desk and asked in Spanish where claw hammers were.  The guy said,"I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're saying."  I laughed and walked away!

By the way, what were you doing looking in the secretary's drawers?

    Your story is suspect, hoss.

  2. I agree, if want to live in America and assimilate into the public, you should make an effort to learn the predominately spoken language. It's common courtesy. Before I went to Germany for a vacation, I took a crash course in German, granted my German was pretty lacking overall I knew enough to get by. If I can do that to just spend a few days in Germany. Then the immigrants who want to live he can at least do the same.

  3. Ew.  Yeah.  If I knew someone who posted that I'd press "I" for "Ignore."

  4. No it's not racist or discriminating. I actually agree with that saying. People who come to live in America need to learn English. English is the language of the United States. It's also a politically correct double standard. Just my view.

    edit:

If I was to live in Mexico or Germany, I would learn to speak the language first. This is a sign that I respect their language and culture.

  5. you should buy that person the shirt that says "Homeland Security" and that has a picture of Native Americans holding weapons.....it's all relative....

  6. it could be. but it could not be. true, when i hear the statement, i do think something along the lines of racism. but if that's the only sentence you saw, then you can't exactly 100% brand that as racist. i've heard that line by the way before. im not saying i agree or disagree, just thought i would point that out.

and i dont think racism should be taken lightly, but people do need to relax a little bit. american citizens are becoming the minority in some places, people are racist against white people, and i've just accepted that, no reason to cause a scene about it. you're no different.

  7. its the governments way of accommodating the illegal immigrants which they CLAIM to be trying to prevent from getting in the US.

  8. I agree with that sign, because the last time I checked, we live in America, not Mexico. I think that Spanish speaking people should just go back to Mexico if they want to speak Spanish. And Spanish is NOT a official language of America, so English should be the only option. And if someone speaks Spanish AND lives in the US, then they really NEED to learn English, because not everyone in America is like them

  9. I SOOO agree with that!! Also, why is every food item in the store subtitled in Spanish, when none of the items in the hispanic aisle are subtitled in English?!

  10. Many mean, miserable people work as secretaries.

I'm glad I don't work in an office any more.

  11. Yeah, it's bigoted or xenophobic (discrimination/hate towards immigrants or foreigners.)

I wonder why she is allowed to post that in the work place?

  12. i don't think it is. i totally agree with it actually. i think that if you want to be in america u should speak english. it's america we speak english if u don't like it then leave. this is just one more thing that proves the whole someday the us. is gonna b mostly mexican.

  13. Yes.

    Whiny Americans annoy me.

  14. yea it is. and professor sweetbacks answer isn't very intelligent. its actually quite ignorant

  15. Because 2 (Dos) is for spanish.

  16. We live in a country of diversity.

    Get wit the program man.

  17. its pretty obvious if you speak and understand English, then you press 1 for English.
