  1. We've all heard too many horror stories about child predators polluting the internet. Many sites seem harmless, but children can see and read too many inappropriate things. Even here, I'm oftened shocked that people post so much vulgarity when very young teenagers are here for fun. I think children should be doing other things to stimulate their minds....reading, finger painting, building with Legos,

playing with trucks & toys, being outside in sand boxes or on a swing, feeding ducks at the park, walking hand in hand with a parent, picking up leaves and things to examine, watching birds and bees and butterflies, playing with a puppy and other children, racing in big wheels, playing freeze tag, catching lightning bugs, cuddled up in a warm blankie watching the stars with mommy & daddy, listening to soft music.

  2. IT'S GOOD PROVIDED YOU HAVE A PARENT CONTROL

  3. The internet is fine for children, WITH proper supervision from parents. There are some dangers like pedophiles in chat rooms, inappropriate sites, etc. As long as parents supervise their childrens surfing or use blocking software it should be okay.

  4. I'm surprised people have not mentioned one key thing - developing concentration is VERY important at this age.  It's what children crave.

Media such as television and computers do not do this well.  Even the best programming in the world cannot get around one fact - the screen is continually refreshing.  We cannot really focus on the screen without our minds subconsciously noticing this.  This leads to a break down in concentration.  The child might be able to watch that for a long time, but not in an intense fashion we see.

There has been some speculation that computers and television also contribute to bring out symptoms in autism, but it is very inconclusive.  However, autism is a very social disorder and television/computers are something that do harm our social skills if not monitored properly.

With this question, I think it's also important to see that children do not learn quite as much as we think they do from media.  Countless studies have shown this.  So even with the benefits we see, they may not be quite as important benefits as we think they are.

I'm not saying get rid of media at all.  I'm not one of those people and I do not think it's necessarily a good thing to say that in today's world.  I just think the benefits are not really there like we think they are and there are side effects to it, so be careful.

  5. Because it is easy to see adult content.By blocking this using internet explorer's tools we can make it good for childrens.

  6. It'seasy for themto access sites they shouldn't be looking at. They're mindsare still young. So they could be chatting with people who they shoulden't be,looking and getting ideas.  Think of the internet asa teacher, filledwith good, bad,and everything in between that it could spew out and tell or show your child. that might give you an idea of why it could be bad.

  7. Well if you are on the internet, you have to be on the computer.  It is not good for your eyesight... Plus, if children aren't supervised while they are on the computer they can go on bad websites.  For example, myspace. It is not a bad website if you know your limitations. But when kids are growing up they want to be "cool" so they create their own myspace pages.  Sometimes they get carried away and act before thinking and they make bad decisions that often land them in trouble.  The internet is an awesome resource but if its not used correctly it can be used for bad things. Children also instant message on the computer and some kids that are not that intelligent talk to strangers and end up making mistakes.

  10. Children learn best through interaction with other humans - notably parents and teachers. Children are natural mimics and have to have interaction with other people in order to develop age-appropriate social skills. The internet doesn't teach them this.

  11. It is easy to access adult sites. Easy to talk with strangers and tell your info to so they can kidnap you after they stalk you. They will be more likely to know bad things.

  12. internet can be good for children if supervised with an adult...however, there are so many prono sites a child can get into without even trying. there are many weirdos on the internet who love to prey on young kids.....

  13. It can be good and bad.  Older children tend to do things or look at things on it that are not appropriate.  There are games that can be played on it that teach, similar to the tv shows they are sponsored by, such as PBS Kids, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, etc.  Other sites seems to perpetuate weird stuff, like My Space, chat rooms, etc., those are what seem to turn "bad" for kids.

  14. Because a) it's easy for them to get to a good website and b) kids could give away personal information without knowing.

  15. The internet is fine for children, with proper supervision from parents. Children always need to be supervise in what ever they do.
